A little bit of history…
Grandparents Day began in the early 1970s when West Virginia housewife, Marian McQuade, decided there should be a day to honor grandparents throughout the country. She worked with local politicians as well as civic, business and church groups to get the idea off the ground and in 1978 President Jimmy Carter signed the proclamation citing the first Sunday after Labor Day to be National Grandparents Day.
Marian McQuade, the founder of Grandparents Day, had over 40 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
The forget-me-not is the official flower of Grandparents Day.
There are over 50 million grandparents in the United States.
